Bhujia
January / March 2015 / 2016 / 2017
In 2015/2016/2017 Paolo Rosso, director of Microclima, Venice’s Serra dei Giardini della Biennale, invited me to take part at the Guwahati Research Program in Assam, India. During the first month I collected pictures from the urban environment: snacks colourful packaging, hand-painted logos and advertisements, fancy and not fancy fabrics.
In my opinion, one of the most interesting aspects of Guwahati is the almost forced relationship between a deep-rooted tradition past and a present filled with cars, horns, last generation mobile telephones, hand-painted advertisements and brands of big companies. Assam is famous for its ancient tradition in fine textile production.
I Design and produce a collection of textiles made with Indian silk, linen, and cotton, in which the typical Assamese fabrics patterns are replaced by decorations inspired to the Guwahati urban environment. My project was developed with the precious help of local artisans, fairly paid.
In 2017 the Bhujia’s collection fabrics were showcased among the textile collection of the Assam State Museum, in occasion of the exhibition Good Horn, Good Brake, Good Luck curated by Microclima.
